Neighborhood Watch

(from minutes of 03/02/05)

Neighbourhood Watch Needs Help

If you would be interested in this please get in touch with GVCA

Harold Zinger gave a brief overview of the Neighbourhood Watch program, which consists of helping homeowners to mark their valuables for identification purposes in case of theft and to teach them other ways to keep their properties safe and secure.  The program has been in existence for about 7 years, although the last three have not been very active.

The system used to coordinate Neighbourhood Watch was one of having zones (currently there are 8 in Glenmore), with each zone having a zone captain, and then blocks within these zones, each having a block captain.  Each resident pays a fee of $5 to participate in the training, to use the engraver and to display a Neighbourhood Watch sticker.

Harold indicated that after all these years he and the other main coordinator, Caesar Turri, were ready to hand it over to someone else.  He said that they have always been under the umbrella of the community association and would like to turn the records and the amassed funds over to the GVCA.

David spoke with the RCMP Community Policing about how they manage Neighbourhood Watch in other parts of the city.  It is basically the same process except on a lower key, with the residents having to take the initiative themselves to invite the RCMP out to do the training and then provide the kits (information and stickers).  It is not as thorough a method as the one used by Harold, but still could be effective.

Action: The board discussed the options and decided that an effort would be made to find someone to take over from Harold and continue to run the program as it currently exists.  Barring that, it would be turned over to the RCMP, but the GVCA would continue to promote the program.
